Gatsby Benchmarks

The Gatsby Benchmarks are a nationally recognised framework that defines world class careers education for young people. First published in 2014 and updated in 2025, the eight benchmarks provide schools and colleges with a clear structure for delivering high quality, equitable, and impactful careers guidance. They are now used by over 4,700 institutions across England to shape ambitious, evidence based careers programmes that raise aspirations, improve career readiness, and reduce the likelihood of students becoming NEET.

Gatsby Benchmarks Explained

Grounded in extensive national and international research, the benchmarks form the cornerstone of government statutory guidance and support students in understanding pathways, accessing relevant labour market information, experiencing workplaces, engaging with employers and further/higher education, and receiving personalised guidance. They ensure that every young person—regardless of background—has access to the information, opportunities and support they need to make informed, aspirational decisions about their future.
